Happy Mothers Day

To all those mothers out there, or mothers to be, a very Happy Mothers Day. While this has been so commercialized by the retail industry its also a day for all your loved ones to appreciate the joy and challenges of being a mother.

My mother taught me many things that I didn’t realize she did till I was a mother myself:

  • I try not to say: “Because I say so” – she never did and always tried to explain in terms I’d understand or say – you’ll understand when you’re older.
  • Look at your children as people, not just as babies, toddlers, kids, teens. Sometimes in the day-to-day we forget this.
  • As a mother you’re many hats at once – person who helps finish a science project the night before because you forgot about the deadline, nurse/doctor, chauffeur - driving you to swim practices daily, watching you race at every race, just always being there whether you won or lost and your allowance/bank account, finding that exact car/toy just as you’re heading out the door, finding all 29 pieces of a puzzle.
  • Some things I learnt to make my kids do: clean up after themselves, be polite, neat, appreciate what others do for them. I understand now how hard this is to do.
  • The anxiety worse physical pain you feel when your babies (they’re always babies to you) are sick, in the hospital. You’d happily trade places with them or do anything to make them better.
  • The joy in every accomplishment – eating with their fingers for the first time, writing their name.

So thanks Mom.

I had a great Mothers Day. The family took me out to brunch. Then we played in the sand at Golden Gardens Park (Shilshole). It was a great day all in all.

Emergency call - weather related?

In Washington state, this past weekend saw near record temperatures. In fact on Sunday a previous record of 93 degrees came close to being broken. However, emergency crews stated there was an increase in weather-related emergency calls. I wonder if my call to emergency services this Sunday also qualified as "weather related" - maybe by a stretch.

On Sunday evening, when checking on a burger to see if was cooked, I dropped the grilling knife (center one in the picture) point down on my right foot. 5 Piece Finger Grip Tool Set by Mr. Bar-B-Q
At first there was no pain, just spurting of blood. Anyhow, elevating the leg, putting pressure on it, calling paramedics and 10 minutes later they were assessing the situation. They were sure the tendons were not injured. The wound needed cleaning/washing and stitching/gluing. They were pretty sure a vein or minor artery had been hit but were confident it would clot soon. They recommended going to the emergency room.
Luckily my employer offers mobile doctor benefits and the doc was at our place a couple of hours later cleaning and glueing the wound shut.

So it could have been much worse. So do you think this was weather related? (It was too hot, eveyone and their parents were grilling, etc.)?

Reading when driving/walking

Today on my way in to work as I was stopped at a light, I saw a person walking on the sidewalk reading a book. He also had a serious set of headphones (the kind that look like no other sound can get in). So, not only can he not see where he's stepping, he can't even hear possible screeching cars/horns that might require him to jump out of the way. Wish I had been able to snap a shot of this.

Then I also had an instance of a Metro bus driver stopped at a light reading a book. I don't think that in itself is dangerous, but I do think as a reader to have only 30 second intervals to read in is not enough to keep continuity of the page/line I'm on, much less the content.

Thanksgiving week

We went to Daytona Beach, Florida again this year for Thanksgiving. Usually the things we do are visit the beach (a lot!), watch a movie, play mini-golf and go to the Daytona Boardwalk and play arcade games. This year we skipped the mini-golf and the arcade games but still had a good time. At the beach we coughed a lot specially on our second visit. The waitress at Mai Tai restaurant (we went there 3 years straight now - since they opened) said it was the red tide making her cough.

My almost 1.5 year old (M) had a cough caused I think by that and some fever too which is why we skipped the mini-golf which gets pretty windy and the arcade games as well.

We also watched "The Bee Movie" which we all enjoyed (except for little M, who slept through most of it). R's favorite movies this whole week were Toy Story (1 & 2) which we watched many times.

I love flying in/out of Daytona Beach as the airport is small, security check-in is a breeze as is getting on/off the plane. Everyone is also very charming and friendly.
